Using Technology to Create the Virtual Opera Libertaria

Using Technology to Create the Virtual Opera Libertaria Creating a full‐length opera in the 21 st century requires a composer’s ingenuity and ability to think outside the box and into cyberspace. What do crowdsourcing, machinima, virtual auditions, social networking, and a libretto have in common? Each is a key element in the production of Libertaria: The Virtual Opera , a feature‐ length sci‐fi animated opera created through online collaboration and cutting edge technology. For those who live outside the 21 st century digital world, terms like crowdsourcing, virtual, and machinima may seem like a foreign language out of a Ray Bradbury sci‐fi novel. Crowdsourcing involves assigning tasks for your project to the public at‐large. More than simply outsourced, a project that is crowdsourced can involve dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of people contributing a small part to the creative whole. Typically one person acts as the “brain” of the project, co

Life After Autotune - Pop Music Industry

Life After Autotune - Pop Music Industry Few DAW plug-ins today produce as much debate among audio engineers and fans as Auto-Tune. In a nutshell, Auto-Tune is an audio tool that allows an engineer to “tweak” pitchy performances by subtly (or sometimes blatantly) altering a singer’s performance and fixing out-of-tune notes. How does a simple plug-in like Auto-Tune create such incredible controversy?             Auto-Tune has very interesting, and decidedly unmusical, beginnings. Musician Andy Hildebrand developed Auto-Tune by “analyzing seismic data” when he worked for the oil industry. Being a musician, he decided to use this technology for music, developed Auto-Tune over a period of a few weeks (Prisco, 2014). Pop music was never the same             Using Auto-Tune in the music industry has a few competing camps – the purists, the engineers, and the hacks. In one camp, there are professional singers, purists who refuse to use Auto-Tune. For example, in the classical music w

Enigma - Short Experimental Animation Film

This was an experimental animation work that I created while studying music technology at Florida International University. It took a semester to complete simply using some of the features in Final Cut. The beginning and ending are mirrors of each other, and I use various synthesis processes to create the sound, including using Supercollider, Soundhack, and other programs.  Enigma remains to be my most popular piece, with performances throughout the world at various music festivals. My husband and I often joke around that this was my masterpiece, the work I will forever be known for, as it is accepted almost any festival I send it to, and just remains to be a singular work of synthesis genius (I suppose).  In any case, I hope that you enjoy this work. It is mesmerizing to say the least, and quite an interesting sonic exploration.  -- Sabrina Peña Young Like this video?  Then you will love Composer Boot Camp 101:  50 Exercises for Students, Educators, and Music Profe
